Notation

Note values, dots, rests. All C, G and F clefs. Drawing notes, rests, ledger lines. The Middle-Line Rule: stems, clusters, notation of more than one part on a single staff, beaming and tying notes.

Rudiments

Simple and compound time signatures. Names of scale steps. All major scales, key signatures in common clefs. Written transposition of diatonic passages.

Counterpoint Preliminaries

Notation

Accidentals (including double sharps and double flats), cancelling accidentals, cautionary accidentals, conventions of writing multiple accidentals. Tuplets. Performance indications, dynamics and articulation marks.

Rudiments

Chromatic Intervals. All harmonic and melodic minor scales. Harmonic chromatic scales.

Assessment

RUDIMENTS (SH+TSM) Examination (pass/fail).

COUNTERPOINT (SH) one coursework assessment in each of the first three species (13.3% each), one 3-hour examination on all the first three species (60%); (TSM) one coursework assessment in each of the first three species (33.3% each).

* ASSESSMENT 1 (due by 12:00 Tuesday MT Week 8): write two first-species exercises on each of the Set Five cantus firmi, placing the counterpoint above the cantus firmus in one exercise and below it in the other.

† ASSESSMENT 2 (due by 12:00 Tuesday HT Week 1): write two second-species exercises on each of the Set Five cantus firmi, placing the counterpoint above the cantus firmus in one exercise and below it in the other.

¶ ASSESSMENT 3 (due by 12:00 Tuesday HT Week 8): write two third-species exercises on each of the Set Five cantus firmi, placing the counterpoint above the cantus firmus in one exercise and below it in the other.

Weekly Work

Weekly exercises begun in class are to be completed in your own time and submitted to the office by 12:00 the following Tuesday.

The purpose of these exercises is to prepare for the assessments and examination(s); you do not need to fill out a cover sheet for them because they do not carry any marks.
